The Interview
How did the idea come about?
Giuseppe: Hi Maciej, thanks for agreeing to do this interview. I came across your site, Entertrained, almost by chance, and I have to say, it immediately caught my attention. How did you come up with the idea? Could you tell me more about it?
Maciej: Hi Giuseppe, it’s a pleasure to participate in your interview! The idea for Entertrained initially arose from a personal need. Although I had been typing on a computer for much of my life, I realized that my technique could be improved. At the end of last year, I finally decided to learn the proper touch typing method. I quickly realized that my favorite type of practice is retyping real texts instead of random sets of words. If the text is also interesting, that would be awesome. And what is more interesting than a good book?
I searched for existing solutions but was not fully satisfied with them, so I decided to make my own. I started with a quick prototype, and after some initial success, I thought it was worth pursuing. It shouldn’t take more than a couple of months, right? After many months (seven and counting) of designing, coding, and preparing books, the result is what you see on Entertrained.

Come è nata l'idea?

Maciej: Ciao Giuseppe, è un piacere partecipare alla tua intervista! L’idea di Entertrained è nata inizialmente da un'esigenza personale perché, nonostante abbia digitato al computer per gran parte della mia vita, mi sono reso conto che la mia tecnica poteva essere migliorata. Alla fine dello scorso anno, ho deciso di imparare il metodo corretto di digitazione a dieci dita. Ho capito subito che preferivo praticare digitando testi reali piuttosto che insiemi casuali di parole. E se il testo fosse anche interessante, sarebbe ancora meglio. E cosa c'è di più interessante di un buon libro? Ho cercato soluzioni esistenti, ma nessuna mi soddisfaceva completamente, quindi ho deciso di crearne una mia. Quello che è iniziato come un semplice prototipo è diventato un progetto più grande. Dopo sette mesi di lavoro su design, codifica e preparazione dei libri, è nato Entertrained.
Challenges and development
Giuseppe: It’s truly a brilliant idea! The ability to combine reading with typing by transcribing book texts is a refreshing and stimulating approach, and I find it incredibly engaging. The creation of a project always comes with its challenges. During the development of Entertrained, what was the biggest difficulty you had to face?
Maciej: This project presented many challenges, such as achieving a good typing feel, parsing Epub files for typing purposes, and accurately tracking and calculating statistics. However, I believe the most challenging aspect was orchestrating all the small features into a coherent, smooth experience.

Sfide e sviluppo

Maciej: Ci sono state diverse sfide, come ottenere una buona sensazione di digitazione, analizzare i file epub per renderli adatti alla digitazione e monitorare accuratamente le statistiche. Tuttavia, credo che la sfida più difficile sia stata orchestrare tutte le piccole funzionalità in un’esperienza utente fluida e coerente.
The choice of books
Giuseppe: I can imagine. Coordinating everything to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience is definitely complex. Speaking of content, how do you choose the books to include on the site? Do you follow a specific criterion, or do you base it on personal preferences?
Maciej: The books I use are all either in the public domain or under a Creative Commons license. This is important so that users can enjoy them without any barriers. Another important focus is ensuring the highest quality of the texts (it’s no fun to type typos). That’s why I decided to mostly rely on books provided by the Standard Ebooks project.
It’s an excellent resource where you can find hundreds of high-quality, public-domain books.For the initial selection of 100 books, I tried to include the most famous classics and a good variety of genres for everyone to enjoy.

La scelta dei libri
Giuseppe: Posso immaginare. Coordinare tutto in modo che l'esperienza risulti piacevole e fruibile è sicuramente complesso. A proposito di contenuti, come scegli i libri da includere sul sito? Segui un criterio particolare o ti basi su preferenze personali?
Maciej: I libri che utilizzo sono tutti di dominio pubblico o sotto licenza Creative Commons. Questo è importante per permettere agli utenti di goderne senza alcuna barriera. Inoltre, mi concentro molto sulla qualità dei testi, perché digitare testi pieni di errori non è affatto divertente. Per questo motivo, mi affido principalmente ai libri forniti dal progetto Standard Ebooks, un’ottima risorsa con centinaia di libri di dominio pubblico di alta qualità. Per la selezione iniziale di 100 libri, ho cercato di includere i classici più famosi e una buona varietà di generi, così da accontentare tutti i gusti.
Looking to the future
Giuseppe: I completely agree—paying close attention to the quality and accessibility of the texts is definitely a winning choice and reflects a meticulous attention to detail. Looking ahead, are there any new features or updates you have planned for Entertrained?
Maciej: Yes! This is just the beginning of my journey - many features are on the way. The next update will introduce user accounts, allowing you to synchronize your progress across devices, upload custom books, and access a significantly larger public library.
For long-term plans, I aim to add more detailed statistics, missed-word practice, and the ability to retype Wikipedia articles. Additionally, I plan to introduce fun features like achievements, levels, and other perks.

Sguardo al futuro
Giuseppe: Sono pienamente d'accordo, prestare grande attenzione alla qualità e all'accessibilità dei testi è sicuramente una scelta vincente e che riflette la cura per i dettagli. Guardando al futuro, ci sono nuove funzionalità o aggiornamenti che hai in programma per Entertrained?
Maciej: Sì, sicuramente! Entertrained è solo all'inizio. Il prossimo grande aggiornamento introdurrà gli account utente, così gli utenti potranno sincronizzare i progressi su diversi dispositivi, caricare libri personalizzati e accedere a una biblioteca pubblica molto più ampia.
In futuro, ho in mente di aggiungere statistiche più dettagliate, pratica specifica per le parole mancate e la possibilità di ridigitare gli articoli di Wikipedia. Support for new languages
Giuseppe: It sounds really promising! At this point, I have to ask: do you plan to add support for books in other languages, perhaps Italian?
Maciej: I plan to add it eventually, but as I mentioned, I’m aiming for quality. This will require designing a system to ensure that foreign-language books meet high standards. I’m planning to create a public repository for native speakers to contribute. It will take some time, but the good news is that the custom upload feature will likely solve the problem for most users!

Supporto per nuove lingue
Giuseppe: Sembra davvero promettente! A questo punto devo chiederti, hai in programma di aggiungere il supporto per libri in altre lingue, magari l’italiano?
Maciej: Sì, ci sto pensando. Come ho accennato prima, sto puntando alla qualità, quindi sarà necessario progettare un sistema che garantisca che i libri in altre lingue rispettino gli stessi standard di quelli attuali. Sto pensando di creare un repository pubblico dove i madrelingua possano contribuire. Giuseppe: It would be fantastic to have Italian among the supported languages. Before we wrap up, is there any advice you’d like to offer to those looking to improve their typing skills?
Maciej: Besides proper technique and focusing on accuracy, the most important thing is consistent practice and having fun while doing it! If you enjoy reading, the fifteen-minute daily goal on Entertrained might be perfect for you!
